Claire Dean, aged 23 from Church Village, Infoline Operator
is another graduate who is helping to reverse the brain drain
from Wales at bay.
Claire completed a degree in Tourism Management at the University
of Wales Institute College (UWIC) in Cardiff last year. Unsure
of her next step after University, Claire spotted the advertisement
for a job as an Infoline Operator.
Claire subsequently applied for the job and was offered the
position upon graduating last June.
The Infoline operator, said:
"I studied modules on health and safety as part of my
degree, and found it interesting and stimulating. My knowledge
of the industry was still quite limited at the time, but as
soon as I joined the Infoline team I was enrolled on a six
week intensive training programme.
"I was also assigned a buddy to help me get up to speed
with health and safety legislation. It was quite a while before
I took my first unassisted call, but when I did, I felt confident
enough to handle the enquiry.
"What I enjoy most about the job is that every day is
different. As a team, we deal with an average of 1,000 calls
a day from employers, employees and the general public.
"The average enquiry lasts about three or four minutes
and can cover a wide range of health and safety issues. Being
a graduate, I'm used to research, which has proven a great
asset when I need to find information fast."
Claire said:
"There's a real team spirit here and the opportunities
for career progression are excellent. I recently completed
the National Education Services Board of Safety and Health
(NESBOSH) qualification, and I’m now considering enrolling
on the diploma in Health and Safety."
