Graduates across both Programmes came together to take part in the first Data Science x Cybersecurity Hackathon, hosted by Cardiff University.
Throughout the week-long event, the group heard from a series of industry experts who talked on a range of topics. Speakers included representatives from Airbus, lecturers at Cardiff University and one of our consortium members, Peter Sueref of Empirisys.
They also worked in teams with real network data to solve some real-world security problems.
All of graduates showed enthusiasm and commitment and it was a pleasure to watch their confidence and skills grow throughout the week.
Pratibha Shinde is on placement with Monmouthshire Building Society as a Business Intelligence Analyst. She told us:
“The hackathon pushed us to work collaboratively and think creatively to find solutions to the real world risks in digital lives. It was a great opportunity to learn from others and work together towards a common goal.”

“I particularly enjoyed Dr. Andrew Hood’s talk on his PhD, “exploiting the self-similarity of inter-packet timings to detect and investigate network attacks and identify abnormalities”. This struck me as a great example of the (often hidden) value of metadata; a principle which resonates with the work we are undertaking at Empirisys.”
Thanks to the team from Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science for organising a challenging and highly engaging activity for all involved.
